Record GCSE Results An Achievement To Be Proud Of

Once again after early analysis of this years GCSE results Wirral Students have performed better than ever.

This year 54% of Wirral Students achieved 5+ A*-C grades which is the new national indicator, compared to 50% last year. Additionally 72% achieved 5 or more A* -C GCSE results compared to 66% last year. Labour Councillor Phil Davies who is the Cabinet Member for Childrens Services and Lifelong Learning said

 The results are fantastic once again and I want to congratulate the staff and students for yet another year of record breaking achievement. This demonstrates the Councils investment in education over past few years is paying dividends.

These results together with the £26.5 million investment in the new Woodchurch High School demonstrate the commitment to education by the Labour Party.


Woodchurch High School

Work is progressing well with the construction of the new £26.5 Million state of the art school, the school which is being built as part of the Governments Building Schools For The Future program which will see every State Secondary School in England, 3500 in total rebuilt or remodelled over the programs lifetime. The building Schools For The Future program is the largest and most ambitious scheme of its type in the World and will transform the education some 3.3 million students.

The new school at Woodchurch which will open in September 2010, which as well as providing world class state of the art educational facilities, it will be environmentally sustainable.

St Benedicts

Upton Labour Community Action Team members, Councillors John George and Tony Smith have been instrumental in getting the St Benedicts site cleared after a proposed housing development for the site fell through because of the credit crunch.

St Benedicts School has now been demolished and work is continuing to make the site ready for when market conditions to improve.

More Government Support For The Local Economy

Yesterday Business Secretary Lord Mandleson announced that the Government would give £340 Million repayable launch aid to Airbus to help with the development of the new A350 aircraft.

The wing expertise at Broughton near Chester will be utilised safeguarding 1200 highly skilled jobs. The funding from the Government will also allow the development of composite technologies, with potential of the UK becoming World Leaders in the field. For more information click here
