Labour Is Working

Figures published by the independent Office of National Statistics yesterday, show that the UK economy has begun growing again, with GDP growth estimated at 0.1% for the last quarter of 2009.At the same time, a report by experts at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned against withdrawing government support from the economy too soon.
Whilst there is no doubt that this is good news, there can be no room for complacency as NW Regional Minister Phil Woolas explains:

This is good news for the North West and for Britain, but also a reminder that there is no room for complacency. The Labour Government will continue to do everything we can to protect communities across the North West and keep the economy growing. During this difficult period, Labour is taking action to help people in the North West back into work and to support local businesses.
We introduced the ‘Time to Pay’ scheme, which allows struggling companies to postpone tax payments and helps keep businesses afloat. We will continue to help local people who have lost their jobs to stay in their homes through our mortgage support schemes. While these figures suggest Labour’s economic policy is working, we will continue to take action to strengthen growth and promote jobs. As the IMF has said, while the economy is still recovering, it is crucial that the Labour Government maintains support for the local economy here in the North West and nationally. Today’s news underlines how dangerous it would be to throw caution to the wind, as the Tories propose, and make deep cuts now.

Labour Is Rejecting The Decade Of Low Growth And Austerity Offered By The Tories

At the next Election there will be a big choice about the change we want for Wirral and the Country as a whole, a choice that offers change for the many under Labour as opposed to change for the privileged few that the Conservatives offer, which is a change you can ill afford?

In his Pre Budget Report, Chancellor Alistair Darling set out a balanced package to protect the frontline services such as Schools, the Police and the NHS as well as invest in growth and half the deficit fairly in 4 years.

Our plan is to protect frontline public services – making them smarter, more efficient and more responsive.

The Tories’ plans would do lasting damage to our public services and involve scrapping Labour’s patient guarantees, including to cancer patients.

Our plan is to tax fairly – ensuring that those at the top make a fair contribution

The Tories plan to give unfunded and unfair tax cuts to the wealthiest – like their giveaway of £200,000 to each of the 3000 wealthiest estates.

Our plan is to invest in growth – because faster growth will cut unemployment and its cost. It is the best way to reduce the deficit.

The Tories’ plans would deliver a decade of austerity and low growth – their plans involve cutting support to the economy right now, leading to higher unemployment and bigger welfare bills. They would give over £10 billion in tax cuts to the wealthiest few.

Our plan means that we will fulfil our commitment to halve the deficit within 4 years.

We will secure growth – not pull the plug on economic recovery. When the recovery is secured we will halve the deficit in 4 years. We will tighten our belts, as families across the country are doing.

The plan outlined in the Pre Budget Report outlines how Labour will take the British economy out of the downturn fairly and sustainably – avoiding the dangerous, damaging and immediate cuts proposed by the Conservatives.

The IMF Praises Gordon Brown And Backs Labour On The Economy

Many Tories have since the financial crisis started predicted that Labour will eventually have to go running cap in hand to the IMF.

Again like everything else the facts prove that even in opposition how far out of their depth the Tories really are.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn who is the Managing Director of the IMF has been speaking at the annual CBI conference where he said that the “World owed a debt of gratitude to Gordon Brown”, he also backed Gordon Brown’s fiscal stimulus and warned that withdrawing the stimulus too early would be costlier than withdrawing it too late.

Compare that with the approach of David Cameron and the Tories who have promised an emergency budget within 50 days of winning the General Election so they can enact George Osborne’s ‘Age Of Austerity’ which really means savage cuts in the services that millions of ordinary rely upon, the banner below from Conservative Home says it all really

More evidence that the Tories can’t be trusted to manage a smile let alone be put in a position of power.

The Tories Exposed Again On Sure Start

On one of the Wirral Tory websites it is claimed that there are secrets plans by the Labour led Council to slash funding for Sure Start by £300,000.  This is nonsense as the Tories well know, the facts are

  • No Sure Start Service Has Been Cut.
  • The £300,000 Funding Is Not Required By Sure Start In This Financial Year.
  • Additionally The £300,000 In Question Is Being Diverted To Other Services For Children Aged 0-5.

For all the promises by the Tories to protect Sure Start (don’t forget David Cameron’s ‘Cast Iron Guarantee’ over the Lisbon Treaty) Lets not forget that prior the Labour Government being elected in 1997, there was no Sure Start. It was Labour who had the vision to create Sure Start, which was opposed by the Tories.

Maybe the reason the Tories are peddling this misinformation is because of the by-election in Moreton later this week, or could it be that because in the polls support for the Tories is dropping (7 point drop last week alone) the Tories feel they need top adopt these scare tactics. The disgusting thing is the upset caused to mums, dads and the children who use these centres totally unnecessarily.
