Labour Is Working

Figures published by the independent Office of National Statistics yesterday, show that the UK economy has begun growing again, with GDP growth estimated at 0.1% for the last quarter of 2009.At the same time, a report by experts at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned against withdrawing government support from the economy too soon.
Whilst there is no doubt that this is good news, there can be no room for complacency as NW Regional Minister Phil Woolas explains:

This is good news for the North West and for Britain, but also a reminder that there is no room for complacency. The Labour Government will continue to do everything we can to protect communities across the North West and keep the economy growing. During this difficult period, Labour is taking action to help people in the North West back into work and to support local businesses.
We introduced the ‘Time to Pay’ scheme, which allows struggling companies to postpone tax payments and helps keep businesses afloat. We will continue to help local people who have lost their jobs to stay in their homes through our mortgage support schemes. While these figures suggest Labour’s economic policy is working, we will continue to take action to strengthen growth and promote jobs. As the IMF has said, while the economy is still recovering, it is crucial that the Labour Government maintains support for the local economy here in the North West and nationally. Today’s news underlines how dangerous it would be to throw caution to the wind, as the Tories propose, and make deep cuts now.

Labours 150 Apprentices

Thanks to funding from our Labour Government, Wirral Borough Council in partnership with local companies have been able to invest in our young people by creating 100 apprenticeships. Not only that, I am able announce that the scheme has been extended to create an extra 50 apprentices.

I welcome the commitment from both the Government and the local authority to our young people, as in the current climate it is of the upmost importance that we help young people gain the skills they need and help our small companies grow, by funding apprenticeships we are doing both

Record GCSE Results An Achievement To Be Proud Of

Once again after early analysis of this years GCSE results Wirral Students have performed better than ever.

This year 54% of Wirral Students achieved 5+ A*-C grades which is the new national indicator, compared to 50% last year. Additionally 72% achieved 5 or more A* -C GCSE results compared to 66% last year. Labour Councillor Phil Davies who is the Cabinet Member for Childrens Services and Lifelong Learning said

The results are fantastic once again and I want to congratulate the staff and students for yet another year of record breaking achievement. This demonstrates the Councils investment in education over past few years is paying dividends.

These results together with the £26.5 million investment in the new Woodchurch High School demonstrate the commitment to education by the Labour Party.

Woodchurch High School

Work is progressing well with the construction of the new £26.5 Million state of the art school, the school which is being built as part of the Governments Building Schools For The Future program which will see every State Secondary School in England, 3500 in total rebuilt or remodelled over the programs lifetime. The building Schools For The Future program is the largest and most ambitious scheme of its type in the World and will transform the education some 3.3 million students.

The new school at Woodchurch which will open in September 2010, which as well as providing world class state of the art educational facilities, it will be environmentally sustainable.

Improving Our Transport Infrastructure

I warmly welcome today’s announcement by the Labour Government of the £1.1bn railway electrification plan which includes electrification of the line between Liverpool and Manchester.

As well as being lighter, more efficient and environmentally friendly, the new electric trains will reduce journey times between Liverpool and Manchester from 44 minutes to 30 minutes, thus opening up opportunities for the Mersey Region as a whole.

Also I welcome Wirral Conservative Cllr Blakeley’s (no doubt reluctant) change of heart in finally accepting Gordon Brown’s policy of not cutting our way out of recession as illustrated in this press release from Merseytravel and I quote

This investment makes commercial and environmental sense and comes at a time when the economy is in difficulty and investment in public services is essential

Maybe Chris you should have a word in the ear of your Shadow Transport Secretary Theresa Villiers who appears to pour cold water on the investment and I quote

how can we believe that Labour can announce £1.1bn of new spending without impacting on existing transport commitments or putting further strain on public finances already stretched to breaking point?

Overall together with major investment in a vital transport link and a leading Wirral Tory finally seeing the light over investment in Public Services, its been a good day day for Wirral and the Mersey Region as a whole, I just hope that the scheme is not one of David Cameron’s targets in his proposed massacre of Public Services should the Tories win power.
