The IMF Praises Gordon Brown And Backs Labour On The Economy

Many Tories have since the financial crisis started predicted that Labour will eventually have to go running cap in hand to the IMF.

Again like everything else the facts prove that even in opposition how far out of their depth the Tories really are.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn who is the Managing Director of the IMF has been speaking at the annual CBI conference where he said that the “World owed a debt of gratitude to Gordon Brown”, he also backed Gordon Brown’s fiscal stimulus and warned that withdrawing the stimulus too early would be costlier than withdrawing it too late.

Compare that with the approach of David Cameron and the Tories who have promised an emergency budget within 50 days of winning the General Election so they can enact George Osborne’s ‘Age Of Austerity’ which really means savage cuts in the services that millions of ordinary rely upon, the banner below from Conservative Home says it all really

More evidence that the Tories can’t be trusted to manage a smile let alone be put in a position of power.

The Tories Economic Policies Could Push Unemployment To 5 Million

Last week in the Daily Telegraph leading economist Professor David Blanchflower launched a scathing attack on the Tories and in particular Shadow Chancellor George Osborne’s call for immediate public spending cuts, claiming that unemployment could easily rise to 4 million over the next few years as a result of such a policy.

In the article which can be read in full here Professor Blanchflower is quoted as saying

We must not repeat the mistakes of the 1930s by assuming a recovery is taking place and then cutting spending and raising interest rates too early.

Such action could push the economy into a decade-long depression.

If large numbers of public sector workers, perhaps as many as a million, are made redundant and there are substantial cuts in public spending in 2010, as proposed by some in the Conservative Party, five million unemployed or more is not inconceivable

Mr Osborne, I really don’t know which economists are advising you on this brilliant strategy to increase unemployment, but feel free to give me a call. Unemployment makes voters unhappy

The Labour Government accepts that the public debt needs to be tackled and indeed Chancellor Alistair Darling has already indicated that the public debt will be halved over the next four years if Labour are re-elected at the next General Election.

This proves that either the Tories are either incompetent, economically illiterate or both.

The Country simply can’t afford the risk of a David Cameron led Government.

Improving Our Transport Infrastructure

I warmly welcome today’s announcement by the Labour Government of the £1.1bn railway electrification plan which includes electrification of the line between Liverpool and Manchester.

As well as being lighter, more efficient and environmentally friendly, the new electric trains will reduce journey times between Liverpool and Manchester from 44 minutes to 30 minutes, thus opening up opportunities for the Mersey Region as a whole.

Also I welcome Wirral Conservative Cllr Blakeley’s (no doubt reluctant) change of heart in finally accepting Gordon Brown’s policy of not cutting our way out of recession as illustrated in this press release from Merseytravel and I quote

This investment makes commercial and environmental sense and comes at a time when the economy is in difficulty and investment in public services is essential

Maybe Chris you should have a word in the ear of your Shadow Transport Secretary Theresa Villiers who appears to pour cold water on the investment and I quote

how can we believe that Labour can announce £1.1bn of new spending without impacting on existing transport commitments or putting further strain on public finances already stretched to breaking point?

Overall together with major investment in a vital transport link and a leading Wirral Tory finally seeing the light over investment in Public Services, its been a good day day for Wirral and the Mersey Region as a whole, I just hope that the scheme is not one of David Cameron’s targets in his proposed massacre of Public Services should the Tories win power.
